Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level extension is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
